The BARF Diet

Many dogs today suffer badly from allergies. They get itchy with rashes and all types of skin problems. The poor pooches end up spending most of their life on antihistamines or cortisone prescribed by the vet. Also, we are seeing higher occurrence rates of cancer and other auto-immune deficiency diseases such as mange. Why is this happening ? We believe, as do many other people, that our dogs are inheriting weakened immune systems due to many generations of feeding processed dog foods that contain harmful chemical preservatives and flavouring. In addition, much of the nutritional value is lost at the high cooking temperatures (we all know not to overcook our vegetables or they lose all the goodness). Many of these natural vitamins that are lost are then replaced with synthetically manufactured substitutes, often in the wrong proportions. 

So what can you do about it ? Here at Towilla Amstaffs we have been practicing natural rearing methods since 1995. All our dogs are fed a totally raw diet known as BARF. That stands for Bones And Raw Food. We don't give our dogs any processed kibble or canned food. By feeding our dogs a balanced natural diet we help boost the immune system to a level where they can cope with the problems caused by feeding poor quality manufactured foods for generations previously. Their meals are made up of raw meaty bones, along with vegetables, fruit, eggs, dairy products with some supplements such as kelp and flax seed oil. Our dogs are extremely healthy, with fantastic coats and a strong immune system. By breeding from dogs that have been reared naturally we aim to have puppies that will grow up with much stronger immune systems. This ultimately will give you a dog that will be much healthier and live a longer, happier life. 

We are happy to talk to anyone interested in taking the first steps towards a having a healthier family pet. We highly recommend reading the book "Give Your Dog a Bone" by Australian veterinarian Dr Ian Billinghurst. This book really opened our eyes to the hidden side of manufactured dog food. Remember, all the research done into proving how wonderful these processed dog foods are, is funded by the manufacturing giants themselves. Why would they publish any results that weren't in their favour ? Food for thought....
